Fez was founded under the Idrisid rule during the 8th-9th century. It consisted of two autonomous and competing settlements. The streets of Fes are dazzling with an onslaught into the sense-constricting paths throughout silk and tapestry shops, food stands, brass and copper souks, bazaars, mosques and a lot of people. Visitors can enjoy butchers, spice vendors, and bakers who market their delicacies. Together with the old Fes, it is possible to see the Kairaouine Mosque & University, the Jewish Cemetery and Habarim Synagogue, the Chaouwara Tanneries and the Medersa Bou Inania. Fez is one of the imperial cities of Morocco. It is renowned for being home to the world’s oldest university, the Qarawiyyin university.
